50 Things for 50

These are the 50 things for my 50th year – a mixture of reinvigorating old hobbies,
bedding in better routines, and having some new experiences:


  1. Create a piece of art for the walls
  2. Learn to crochet
  3. Sew something for the house
  4. Bake a new cake
  5. Sew something for myself
  6. Make chutney
  7. Make something useful out of clay
  8. Write a poem
  9. Perfect a new vegan recipe
  10. Cook something from the garden
  11. Make some jewellery
  12. Make a snow creature
  13. Bottle jam
  14. Bake a pavlova


  1. Give to a new charity
  2. Donate to a local foodbank
  3. Host a quiz
  4. Take part in activism
  5. Raise money for charity
  6. Play a new game
  7. Clean up a beach or woodland area


  1. Watch a ballet
  2. Go swimming
  3. Discover a new favourite musician
  4. Go to a live comedy gig
  5. Visit an art gallery
  6. Learn about a new favourite artist
  7. Sleep in a blanket fort/den


  1. Climb a hill I have not been up before
  2. Walk some of the Pilgrim’s Way
  3. Sleep under canvas
  4. Grow edible things in the garden
  5. Visit a castle
  6. Get up before the sun in the summer
  7. Walk some of the Fife Coastal Path
  8. Visit a new park
  9. Have breakfast on the patio
  10. Plant a tree
  11. Visit a Loch
  12. Plant some spring bulbs
  13. Visit a new beach
  14. Spot a new bird/animal in the wild
  15. Have a picnic with friends and family


  1. Create a weekly photo journal
  2. Establish a regular film review list
  3. Call/video chat a distant friend at least once a month
  4. Kickstart a new art habit
  5. Increase weekly activity – try some new sports, reinvigorate some old ones
  6. Read at least one book per month
  7. Discover a weekly new ‘fact’
