Ten Things of Happiness

Right now there is a lot buzzing about in my head…here are few things that are making me happy.  How about you?

1. The wonderful images created by Bianca Gomez, especially the wonderful birds she created for Poolga.com:

2. Cucumbers, they taste so good right now…looking forward to when they will grow in my yard:

3.  Hoping to find a spot in the new house for crafty things, and with this in mind, I want to source some better quality materials on our arrival, like this wonderful plant dyed wool felt.

4. Gingerbread, and the little one’s delight at eating ‘Men’ – especially the overjoyed dance of foodie ecstasy:

5.  The gorgeous images at The Vintage Moth:

4. Finding some good thinking about eating locally has been going on at our destination.

5. My orange mint plant spilling abundantly out on the balcony – not much else can thrive out there, but this little hardy number gives me some hope!

6. I’ve not worn these for years, but they fill me with thoughts of sandy summer afternoons:

7. Slowly a little Autumn wearing for the wee guy is taking shape on my needles:

8. I know I am horribly conservative here, but my feet are so particular, and the last pair of these I owned were SO comfy that I overlooked the slightly less than stylish thing…and I could walk for days in them and they lasted AGES, it is time for some new ones this winter I think:

9. This bag – I know, not terribly practical, but rather lovely all the same:

10.  These guys…they ALWAYS make me happy…

Holiday Weekend Wanderings

Happy Fourth!  Our last.  For now anyway.  We went to join our friends for a BBQ on the happy day – and a ceremonial reading of THE Declaration ensued.  Beautiful language.  Inspiring document.  Pity it is not as closely adhered to in political reality as it could be…

The stickiness  returned this weekend, and made for a bit of unreasonableness and grumpiness at times,  but we got out and about anyway.  Even though the hard-working one had to go into the Lab on the in-lieu holiday day. Saturday afternoon we braved the soaring temps and repeated our previous summer’s stroll around McKinley Wood in the southwest corner of Forest Park.

We were looking for the  tree-within-the-tree that the Osage Indians held dear, but took a wrong turn at some point.  There was a lot of stopping and examining the ground.

And some happy strolling with Mama and Dada.

Also some watching boats cruise along the waterways of the park.

And some sitting by the stream and having a little refreshment.  Perfect!

The next morning we had this weird  mesolithic-style playground all to ourselves.  It sorta failed the playground test I think – few too many dangers, horrid gravel surface, no shade.  No wonder it was empty.  What possessed them to build such an intensive and inappropriate space?  Pity really, the idea is good…execution pretty poor.  But we had thought it worth a look for our park-obsessed mini-man.

Well, it was in the middle of the lovely Queeny Park where we did the Run (Walk) for Congo Women a couple of years ago.  So we abandoned the play area and went for another walk.

Shady, pretty and easy walking for the wee guy.  An encounter with an exceedingly friendly dog made his day.  And we were happy to just be out and about with him.  Happiness for Holiday Weekends.  Hope you had a pleasant long weekend too!

Summer Days

While our heads are largely up in the cloud of moving-to-Scotland-in-September, the rest of us is down on the ground of our last St Louis summer.  With Kazuo asking about going to the ‘park’ (yes, his words are advancing) every waking moment (even when we are at a park, or on our way home from a park…it is rather relentless), it has had to have been in the high 90’s with 90% humidity to keep us indoors.  There have been plenty of those days in the past few weeks, and even then, we have gone to the park in the early morning and after tea when the sun has waned a little.  But this week – glorious.  Temps in the 80’s and crisp dry mornings have made for a lot more outdoor fun.

Tuesday we  re-conquered the City Garden with our friends Janna and Sofia.  The wee tots tootled about the sculptures.  Sofia larked about in the fountains while Kazuo edged in then veered away from the water in his usual fashion.  It was a delightful morning of sun, water and stylish sculpture.  A place that St Louis should be justly proud of and another space we know we will miss.

A Teensy Bit Crafty

Summer doesn’t really make me feel like battening down and spending time being crafty.  But there is some impetus right now to (a) finish up projects before we move so that they are ready for the autumn/winter when we arrive (b) use up some crafting supplies so I won’t have to ship them or dispose of them (shudder) (c) make stuff rather than buy stuff to conserve our meagre resources in the face of impending great expenditure (d) make good use of the little bits of nap time I have each day. So lately I have finished a couple of little projects:

A duvet cover for Kazuo, hardly necessary now, but hopefully useful on the new bed in the new house, he was excited to see the Elephant (‘eeeeeeee’ – that is what they say you know!)

A button-brooch for a gift, inspired by this great gift

A pair of recycled t-shirt  shorts for the wee guy who is currently persistently grazing his right knee and needs things that go down over that precious skin

So that is where I am up to this past week.  I discovered again how much I LOVE my sewing machine’s ability to churn out wonderfully automatic and uniform button holes.  I got re-inspired and cut out about six new projects for upcoming babies and some things I want to make for Kaz before we depart.  AND I finally cast on the jersey I want to knit him for the winter (because we all know it will take me six months or more to come near to completion) to go with this hat.  So plenty to keep me busy.  Better get off here and get cracking!
